Enrollment and Attendance FAQs
Who is eligible to attend Volunteer State Virtual Academy (VSVA)?
Any student in grades K–12 who resides in Tennessee and meets the out-of-district eligibility requirements is eligible for full-time enrollment.
How many of my students can I enroll in VSVA?
Because VSVA provides all the lesson plans and materials needed for grades K–12, many parents find it easy to enroll multiple students in the program.
What does it cost to attend VSVA?
Since VSVA is a public school program, there is no tuition. VSVA provides state-certified teachers and all instructional materials for the program.* However, students and families are responsible for providing some consumable materials (such as printer ink and paper). In addition, families are required to provide their own computers and internet access to participate in the program. VSVA will provide loaner computers as needed, and this determination will take place during the enrollment process.
What information is required to enroll?
Interested students do need to submit an application, and there is additional documentation to upload as part of the enrollment process. Visit our How to Enroll page for more information.
What is the attendance policy?
The Tennessee Department of Education requires all public schools to record a minimum of 180 days of attendance with an average of 6.5 hours of instruction each day per TN code 49-6-3004. In addition, students are required by the state of Tennessee to attend a minimum of 32.5 hours of school per week. VSVA has a responsibility to enforce Tennessee’s compulsory education laws.
Teachers will record daily attendance in PowerSchool no more than 24 hours after the previous day. Daily attendance is recorded based on students’ attendance and participation in live Class Connect sessions and asynchronous work assigned and monitored by the teacher. Student attendance to live sessions with the teacher is a daily requirement.
Can our family take a vacation during the school year?
The school calendar includes school holidays or vacation time. Whenever possible, family vacations should align with school vacation days. Parents are encouraged to contact their student’s teacher if they plan a vacation that does not coordinate with the school calendar.
What time zone does VSVA operate in?
VSVA operates in the Central Time Zone, and all classes and events will be listed as Central Time.
