Building Connections: How Volunteer State Virtual Academy Fosters a Thriving Online Community
For many families exploring online learning, one of the biggest questions is simple—and important: Will my child feel connected?
At Volunteer State Virtual Academy (VSVA), we hear this concern often. Parents want the individualization and safety of online school, but they also want their children to laugh with classmates, work together, make friends, and feel like they belong.
That’s why VSVA is committed to actively creating a vibrant, supportive, and engaging community that ensures every student, from kindergarten through high school, feels connected to their peers and teachers.
Making Math Fun and Social: The Success of Numeracy Night
One of the most exciting ways VSVA brings families and students together is through our interactive, school-wide events. Our recent Numeracy Night for K-5 students was an absolute success, showcasing how we create community for online learners!
This was far more than just a typical lesson; it was a family-focused, fun evening designed to make learning math a collaborative and enjoyable experience.
- Whole-Group Start: The night kicked off in a main Zoom room where all K-5 students and their families gathered. The first activity was a fun, math-focused scavenger hunt (e.g., “Find something that’s about a foot long”), designed to be engaging for all ages, from kindergarteners to fifth graders.
- Targeted Breakout Rooms: Students then broke into virtual rooms (K-2 and 3-5) for grade-appropriate math games. Younger students enjoyed a simple, fun dice game, while older students played an online quiz game based on specific math standards.
- Fun for All: The goal was accessibility. The event concluded with a Bingo game where students could build their own boards using a variety of math concepts, ensuring all grade levels could participate and enjoy the fun together.
This event directly addresses the “working in silos” fear by purposefully bringing students (and their siblings and grown-ups) from across the state—and across grade levels—together to interact, play games, and learn in a supportive, shared environment. It’s a powerful example of how online learning can provide the same access to engaging school activities as a traditional setting.
Consistent Socialization Through Homeroom
Social interaction at VSVA isn’t limited to large events. We build dedicated time for peer connection directly into the weekly schedule.
- Weekly Homeroom: Every Monday, VSVA teachers hold a mandatory Homeroom session with their students. This dedicated social time provides students with a safe, joyful environment to connect with their homeroom teacher and peers, build relationships, and strengthen their sense of belonging in the virtual learning environment.
- Guided Conversations: To help students who might struggle with starting conversations in a virtual space, teachers often use virtual “tables” or breakout rooms with specific, fun topics. This gives students a starting point and a shared interest to discuss with their friends, helping them develop those vital social skills naturally.
Celebrating Together: Virtual Holiday Parties
The fun continues throughout the year with special seasonal events, proving that the distance doesn’t dampen the celebratory spirit!
- Interactive Parties: Before breaks, teachers host online holiday parties for their classes. These are highly interactive and often use virtual “tables” (breakout rooms) to give students choices on how they want to socialize.
- Something for Everyone: Students can choose to watch a movie, play holiday-themed online games (or good old tic-tac-toe or checkers), or simply hang out and talk with friends in a social-only room.
This approach ensures that every student can connect in a way that is comfortable for them, addressing the desire for social time while respecting the needs of students who might prefer a more independent activity.
At Volunteer State Virtual Academy, we are actively debunking the myth that online students lack connection. Through engaging family nights like Numeracy Night, consistent weekly homerooms, and fun virtual parties, VSVA is intentionally building a strong, inclusive community for all our students.
